Bill Gates' vision for Microsoft was 'A PC on every desktop'. A simple vision, well executed, I would say. He achieved that vision.
Then, the company's marketers got hold of the vision and it moved to 'Your Potential. Our Passion'. That vision was just like any other marketing-speak which adorns a thousand lorries and vans across the country where you read the strap line and ask the question 'So, what do you do?'.
I can well understand why Mr Gates would sell some of his shares. He's achieved so much with his company, and now he wants to do some other good in the world, whether that's educating the poor, or preventing malaria in Africa. Microsoft will be around for some time yet, but it's no longer the company it was. It's as good a time as any to sell Microsoft shares.
