Made in Britain

Lord Coe, during his closing speech at the Paralympics said these words which will be associated with London 2012 for a long time: "We have stamped those words on the Olympic and Paralympic Games of London 2012. London 2012. Made in Britain.”

He talked about the sign of quality which the Olympics and Paralympics embodied. It was enough to make us Brits to think very differently about ourselves in these challenging times.

The Olympics was a great success not just by showing how many talented athletes we have but also how many brilliant companies and people there are who made the Games what they were. It was not only the large business that made it what it was, but also small business who produced, designed, built and served the Games. Small businesses need just as much determination and focus to get themselves up and running as an athlete.

Small businesses are so important to a country's economy because they know how to serve small niches very well. They decide to make products and serve customers in ways which big businesses often fail to see. And, with an idea, a web site and some ecommerce software a small business can find new customers which others did not realise were there. Online business is probably the biggest thing that has happened for small business in the UK.

British Tea?

Another very British trait is to drink tea. Drinking tea is the solution to stressful moments, it's a chance to socialise with others and share a love of something very simple.

That's why it was great to see this video below about Tregothnan.co.uk. Here is a small business that is very British. It grows and sell its own tea in Britain. Yes, it grows tea in Britain. It started selling online and took £5,000 in its first year from its web site. It now sells a phenomenal amount of products from its website from a small start.

That's Olympian spirit, if I ever saw it.

Watch the video below about a very British small business.

  1. Whatever gave the author the idea to put these three together? Just a random thought I guess. Indeed, putting in a lot of effort is always called for in small and large businesses. E-commerce assists it better by scouring through online networks for customers.
