Gain Followers on Twitter - Why you should have less

I get a hollow feeling in my stomach when people ask me how many Twitter followers I have.

I tell them that I have several thousand Twitter followers, and I feel hollow because I know that having lots of Twitter followers doesn't amount to anything when most of those followers are probably not what they make themselves out to be. Several thousand might sound impressive but I know that my volume of Twitter followers means nothing compared to the value of them.

Be aware of Robots

I started on Twitter with an account in its early days before I really knew what it was all about. Then, I read a few things about it and followed someones suggestion (I didn't know them) about how to gain followers on Twitter. I found a few tools that automatically found me people who were using keywords and which then followed them. Knowing that many people were probably using the same tools as me, I soon saw that people were following me back.

But, of course, it's not really people following you but a robot which is following you for their masters.
Quickly, I gained my first 1,000 followers on Twitter. It felt exciting and my vanity grew. Within a few months, I was up to 2,000 followers and the ball rolled on until I had over 8,000.

Getting followers is all well and good, but when most of them are people using robots and they spam you with details about their products or services, many of which are about 'how to gain followers on Twitter' you know that it's a waste of time. Twitter was becoming less useful for me because of the sheer volume of rubbish tweets I was getting. You simply can't read all the tweets and you wouldn't want to read them if you did have time, especially if someone constantly sends out the same tweet.

There's no time for valuable things such as reading tweets and sharing them with 'retweets' to interested people.

Time for a Clear Out

So, it was time for a clear out of Twitter followers. But, how? Sifting through each follower and 'un-following- them would take hours and Twitter doesn't like you using tools which un-follow people en masse. That's when I came across a good service called 'Twit Cleaner'.

Twit Cleaner is a free service which sifts through your Twitter followers and people you follow, and categorises them into groups of followers who are valuable and valueless.

For instance, it finds people who send out the same link repeatedly, or people who are self-obsessed and allows you to stop following them. The clever part about it is that it gets rid of people you follow on Twitter slowly thereby not getting into trouble with micro-blogging giant.

I have reduced the people I follow by over a thousand in a couple of days having found out that many of them are spammers or self-obsessed. This has also reduced the number of followers on Twitter, but this is not a problem because most of those who un-follow me were robots and spammers anyway.

The beauty of having less crappy followers on Twitter is that you can spend more genuine time looking at information and updates from interesting people and less 'mad money making ideas'.

Retweets are Respectful

To gain followers on Twitter is great as long as they are genuine. Follow interesting people with something good to say. And, do the same back. Only share good, useful information on Twitter which focuses on something other than yourself. Gain followers on Twitter by being interested and interesting in other people.

Be helpful with retweets of other people's posts. Retweets are good to give and good to receive. Retweets are a small mark of respect. Doing this will help you get really good, valuable followers on Twitter.

I now feel less hollow in my stomach about the followers on Twitter I have knowing that I clearing out the rubbish.
