The irony of SEO

Search engine optimisation is a human business

Search engine optimisation is an interesting business.

On the outside, it seems very much like an industry which is all about technology and data. There is a lot of technology to understand and there is a lot of data to analyse, it's true.

But, that is not the whole picture about the business of getting more business through the internet.

A very human business

Running a search engine optimisation business is just as much about human relationships as it is about information and computing.

You would think that to get more business as a SEO business you would need to at the top of the search engine results page to stand a chance of ever getting any business at all.

But, the keywords 'SEO' and 'search engine optimisation' are possibly the most competitive words to go after on the internet, which makes it pretty much impossible as a small SEO business to compete for business with those keywords.

Online business offline

To be a successful, small SEO business, much the best strategy for getting new business from clients who need to get more business through the internet is to generate relationship with local business owners.

I find that businesses don't need someone who just talks to them about data and technology. They need someone who talks to them about their business, their market and their challenges with getting new business, while providing solutions to those problems.

After all, as a small SEO business, you are trying to help those businesses win in their markets. So, you need to be good at knowing their markets and the data which relates to them.

Don't moon the giants

It's just a waste of time competing online for SEO business with the big boys with lots of money to throw at online marketing.

I am far better off competing where the big SEO companies can't reach and becoming an expert in my local business customer's market.

In the coming weeks, I will be writing a series of posts to help you understand how to use SEO as a business solution to help you win more business.
