Semantic search is all the rage when you listen to a crowd of librarians. You probably would not recognise an academic library these days if you have not been in one for 20 year or more.
University libraries are incredibly digital with their provision of information for research. Students research using specialised platforms which enable them to search databases containing journals, articles, data sets and more to help them with their research.
Semantic search is the next step in providing more precise results from a search term which takes it beyond the basic searching that most of us do on Google to find information. Semantic search provides more intelligent results for the user, thereby making their research easier and faster.
On Google, search engine optimisation (SEO) relies on creating great content which is linked nicely with other good content on good websites using keywords or phrases. The links used to be one of the most important aspects of SEO where a keyword was hyper-linked to another website containing relevant content.
But, that appears to be changing on Google now. The links are less important. What is more important is the proximity of terms on a page and in a sentence. It does not have to be linked to be found by Google.
Take a look at this SEOMOZ video which explains it.
